Chartered Insurance Institute (CII)

The CII is the UK's oldest financial services sector institute established in 1873. The Institute has more than 13,000 members outside the UK in nearly 150 countries and 70 affiliated institutes. With office in Asia, India and the Middle East its global professional membership is expanding as the insurance industry grows in emerging markets.

The globalization of the insurance markets was only made possible by the recent liberalization and deregulation of what had been a strongly protected insurance industry. In the early nineties radical reforms were introduced in Latin America and Central and Eastern Europe. In Asia the liberalization process has clearly gained momentum following the Asian crisis. The process has been favoured and speeded up by multilateral agreements, such as the WTO, EU and NAFTA.

Given the privatization of parts of the social security systems such as pension, health and Workers' compensation insurance new business opportunities will open up for experienced foreign insurers and local firms alike. We are seeing a trend for medium-sized domestic insurance firms in the Gulf regions as well as parts of West Africa to band together to form trade associations and private charitable institutes to enable training in their local markets to train the first generation of insurance industry professionals.

And as banking and financial services regulators mature and grow their supervisory remits, insurance is being looked at carefully, too.

Risk Reward provides expert trainers to the CII's accredited public and in-house training courses on Solvency II as well as delivers the CII insurance expert trainers to regulators, insurance firms and banks in emerging markets to support the competence of companies and individuals.
